In response to the publication today of a new consultation on verifying the age of those using websites offering adult content, ISPA Chair James Blessing said the following:

"Internet safety is, and will continue to be, a top priority for the Internet industry, as shown by the provision of free parental controls, the £25 million investment into Internet Matters and robust measures to address child sexual abuse content.

In looking to meet the manifesto commitment to stop children accessing pornographic material by requiring age verification, Government is right to focus efforts on the right part of the Internet value chain, in this instance websites that commercially benefit from adult content and payment processing services.

This is a complex area to introduce legislation into, we hope the consultation will be used to address concerns around issues like enforcing new requirements on content hosted abroad."
