The 2015 ISPA Awards ceremony took place last night with three hundred people from over forty providers attending the gala dinner in the City of London. Home Secretary Theresa May MP was named Internet Villain for forging ahead with communications data legislation and David Davis MP and Tom Watson MP were jointly named as the 2015 Internet Hero for their continued action against communications data and surveillance issues. Hyperoptic were the biggest winners on the night with three awards including Best Superfast Broadband Award and hosting provider catalyst2 won the Customer Choice Award for the third year in a row. Twelve providers came away with awards and John Souter, CEO of LINX was given a special 20^th Anniversary Award for his contribution to the UK Internet industry. ISPA is hosting an event on the Digital Single Market, an ambitious set of EU proposals with the potential to change how online services are regulated across Europe. The workshop has two panels looking at some of the specific proposals affecting ISPA members. Panel one is discussing whether ISPs have ‘a duty of care’ to tackle illegal content and panel two examines how to fairly regulate new and existing players offering telecommunications services. The event takes place 3-6 pm on Tuesday 7 July at the City of London offices of Legal Forum member Kemp Little. The event is free and ends with a networking drinks reception. David Anderson QC, the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation, published his long awaited report on investigatory powers in June. ISPA was pleased that Anderson called for a comprehensive new law in this area and that there needed to be more judicial oversight of warrants. ISPA would like to congratulate Ali Law from Sky and Ross Bray from ASK4 on their election to ISPA Council. Their elections were confirmed at the ISPA AGM as were the re-appointments of Matthew Hare from Gigaclear, Jacquie Mellor from Virgin Media and Malcolm Hutty from LINX. ISPA Council sets the strategic direction of the association and are actively involved in driving forward the policy work of the association.
